"If I am not for myself,
who will be for me?
"If I am only for myself,
what am I?
If not now,
when?"
-Rabbi Hillel

Volunteers are an important and welcome partner of JF&CS. Men and women, old and young, of all faiths and backgrounds, give of their time, their experience, and their compassion for others to help members of our community. They are essential links between individuals and the community, and represent the very best of our tradition of caring and concern.

Friendly Visitors... provide the homebound with a valuable link to the outside world through their interest, concern, consistency and companionship. JF&CS Friendly Visitors enhance the lives of others by listening to seniors' stories, taking a walk, sharing a meal or helping with errands. For many, they provide an important and valued link with Judaism and our traditions. Visitors receive training and support and many have formed long and lasting friendships with their clients.

Telephone Reassurance Calls... help maintain the confidence and security of the older person who may be isolated and lonely. Our callers also can regularly check on the well being of our clients and connect them with professional help, if needed. Training and support are provided.

Volunteer Drivers... provide transportation to medical appointments, shopping and essential errands.

Kosher Meals On Wheels Drivers... provide regular delivery of hot, kosher lunches to elderly clients in Fair Lawn and Elmwood Park who are no longer able to shop and/or cook for themselves. Our KMOW Drivers also serve as our eyes and ears into the community, helping us to care for our clients who are frail and at-risk.

Émigré Orientation and Language Instruction... a crucial part of the resettlement process includes helping individuals and families learn about living in the U.S.A. Our volunteers may help an émigré get his driver's license, learn to shop at the supermarket, apply to school or learn English. Our volunteers enable us to fulfill our responsibility to "welcome the stranger".

Handy Mensch... that special person who can make small, but needed repairs for a senior citizen.
